Core Maths

A Level - Core Maths

Entry Criteria:
– You will need to achieve the pathway criteria, please see the prospectus for further information
– You will need to achieve a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics

Coursework/Examination Requirements:
AS Assessment: Two 90-minute written examinations each worth 50%
Both papers have an element that is based on pre-released material

Awarding Body/Specifications: AQA Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies (Core Mathematics)

Advance Subsidiary Level (AS):
This course is only available as an AS course. If you choose to study this subject it will help you with the mathematical content of
your other subjects.

Unit 1 – Compulsory Content: Statistics of Real Data, Financial Mathematics, Drawing and Interpreting Graphs, Estimation and Standard Form. There is the
expectation that technology is used extensively and Excel skills are developed.

Unit 2 – Compulsory Content: Presentation of Logical and Reasoned Arguments, Communicating Mathematical Approaches and Solutions, Critical Analysis of
Solutions and Methods.

Unit 3 – Optional Content 2A, 2B or 2C: Taught options will depend on the chosen A Level subjects of the majority of students in the class

Unit 2A – Statistical
This option is aimed more at supporting those
students who have chosen courses with an increased
statistical content.
Content includes: Use of Statistical Techniques,
Ranking and Correlation, Distributions and
Probability. In addition, we focus on interpreting and
evaluating these results.

Unit 2B – Critical Path and Risk Analysis
This option is aimed at supporting those students
who have chosen business related courses.
Content includes: Critical Path Analysis including
Use of Charts and Diagrams, Probability Analysis of
expected outcomes including combined events and
Cost Benefit Analysis including Risk Analysis and
Control Measures.

Unit 2C – Graphical Techniques
This option is aimed more at supporting those
students who have chosen courses with an
increased higher mathematical content.
Content includes: Graphical Methods, Rates of
Change and further Exponential and Logarithmic
Relationships. In addition, we focus on interpreting
and evaluating these results.

AS Core Mathematics: This subject is studied over one year as a fourth option on the Extended Pathway or over two years as an enrichment topic on all Pathways.

Progression:
Every student will be encouraged to further develop their analytical and problem solving skills. Up to date reasoning, mathematical and IT skills give
an added advantage both in further study and in the workplace. Core Mathematics carries up to 20 UCAS points. It is supported by both Higher Education and
Industry. Students with a good Core Mathematics grade can receive lower university offers for courses with a mathematical content.

Opportunities: The purpose of this course is threefold. Firstly, to develop your problem solving skills. Secondly, much of the mathematics is directly aimed at
supporting your main subject choices at Sixth Form. Thirdly, to keep all of the mathematical skills you have developed throughout your school career up to date.
