– Students who have not taken a GCSE Drama subject must see the Curriculum Leader of Drama before
they apply for the course, to confirm suitability.
Coursework/Examination Requirements:
A Level Assessments: One written examination 40%
One internal, practical and written assessment 30%
One external, practical examination worth 30%
Awarding Body/Specifications: AQA
Advanced Level (A Level): This A Level qualification will give you the opportunity to build on your existing Drama skills through the practical exploration of play
texts, extend your knowledge and understanding of a range of theatre practitioners and give you the experience of your own and others’ live performances. Drama
and Theatre is widely recognised as an ideally suited A Level for those wishing to study for Arts, Social Sciences or Education degrees at Higher Education.
The following units will be covered on this course:
Unit 1 – Drama and Theatre
Section A: Study of first set text from a performer’s or designer’s perspective
Section B: Study of second set text from a performer’s, designer’s and director’s perspective
Section C: Evaluation of a live theatre production.
Unit 2: Creating Original Drama
Creation and performance of devised drama based on a centre chosen stimulus
Assessed performance and course in the form of a Working Notebook.
Unit 3: Making Theatre Coursework
Practical exploration of extracts from three contrasting texts. Performance of one extract
with a written reflective report.
Advanced Subsidiary (AS): There is not an option to study this as an AS Level qualification as this is a two-year course.
Progression: A wide range of careers and good preparation for Higher Education to study Drama, Performance, English Literature, History, Law, Business Studies,
Linguistics and Education.
Opportunities: You will experience a range of theatre productions and be encouraged to undertake research to support your work.
