A Level - Financial Studies

Entry Criteria:
– You will need to achieve the pathway criteria, please see the prospectus for further information
– You will need to achieve a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics.

Coursework/Examination Requirements:
– Certificate Assessment One written examination worth 65% and one multiple choice examination worth 35%
– Diploma Assessment One written examination worth 65% and one multiple choice examination worth 35%

Certificate/Diploma: In studying for the Certificate/Diploma in Financial Studies (CeFS), you will be encouraged to think about your lifestyle aspirations and taught how to apply the appropriate solution(s) from the wide range available within the evolving Financial Services market place. The Certificate/Diploma in Financial Studies is awarded by the London Institute of Banking and Finance. This course is suited to students who wish to learn how to make informed and confident decisions regarding their finances or are considering a career in the Financial Sector or a Business or Finance degree course.

The following units will be covered on this course:

Certificate (Equivalent to AS Level)/Year 12 Modules
Unit 1 – Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term
This unit will look at the role financial services can play in assisting life planning in the immediate and short term.

Unit 2 – Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term
This unit will study the ability to plan and manage money in the medium and long term.

Diploma (Equivalent to A Level) /Year 13 Modules
Unit 3 – Sustainability of an Individual’s Finances
This unit explores how financial service providers can help individuals plan for
their financial needs in a sustainable way.

Unit 4 – Sustainability of the Financial Services System
This unit explores the methods used by the industry to provide products which meet customers’ needs in a sustainable and profitable way.

Advanced Subsidiary (AS): If you choose to study this subject for one year only you will be awarded the Certificate (equivalent to one AS Level). You will cover the AS unit content.

Progression: A particularly good choice for those wishing to go on to Higher Education after Sixth Form as it will prepare you for the financial rigours ahead. It is also very useful for those considering a Business, Financial or Economics based degree or for going straight into employment.

Opportunities: Students will have the opportunity to go to London to visit the LIBF University Camus and the Bank of England Museum, as well as taking part in the Student Investor challenge, the UK’s premier investment competition and Discover Fortunes, an interactive board game designed to raise awareness of possible careers in Financial Planning.
